Puffy, sagging eyelids are often among the first signs of aging. Loose, thinning skin and weakened muscles can result in droopy upper lids and bags under the eyes, making you feel self-conscious about your appearance. Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is a surgical procedure that focuses on the upper and/or lower eyelids, removing excess skin, repositioning muscle and fat to rejuvenate their appearance. This procedure offers dramatic, long-lasting results, but patients often ask what to expect during recovery.
This blog will cover the ins and outs of blepharoplasty recovery, including tips to make your recovery as smooth as possible.

What to Expect Immediately After Surgery
Dr. Gerth performs eyelid surgery on an outpatient basis so that you will return home the same day. The procedure takes less than an hour, and you will spend some time in our recovery area before we release you to go home. Since you will be groggy from the anesthesia, you will need to have someone drive you home and remain with you for the first 48 hours.
Patients usually experience swelling and bruising around the eyes immediately following surgery. Dr. Gerth recommends keeping the head elevated and using cold compresses and pain medication to relieve these symptoms. You may also notice your vision is slightly blurry at first, but this should improve after a few days. Dr. Gerth may provide eye drops to keep your eyes moist and alleviate the blurriness.
The First Week at Home After Eyelid Surgery
You will likely see bruising and swelling significantly subside by the end of your first recovery week. Your eyelids may begin to itch as they heal, but warm compresses can help relieve the irritation. Most patients can return to work and other activities within 7–10 days.
Tips for a Smoother Recovery Process
These tips can help make your blepharoplasty recovery smoother and more comfortable:
- Get plenty of rest for the first few days
- Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated
- Follow all your postoperative instructions carefully
- Keep your head elevated to reduce swelling
- Use cold compresses to minimize bruising
- Avoid strenuous lifting and exercise for four to six weeks
- Protect your eyes from UV rays with sunscreen and sunglasses
Contact Dr. Gerth’s office if you have any concerns or questions during your recovery process.
When Will You Start to See Results?
As swelling and bruising continue to improve in the following weeks, you will start to see your results. Your eyes may still feel tight, and the surrounding skin may be slightly numb, but these side effects should also improve in time. Your incisions, which were likely raised and red immediately after surgery, should be flattening and fading to a light pink color.
Patients typically feel back to themselves by the one-month mark after surgery. Minor swelling should be almost gone, and incision lines will continue to become less noticeable. Your eyelids should look smoother and more contoured, and you should enjoy your refreshed appearance for many years.
